“Girl from Ipanema” – Antonio Carlos Jobim and Andy Williams

Tall and tan and young and lovely

The girl from Ipanema goes walking

And when she passes I smile

But she doesn’t see

I would be remiss if I did not post Andy Williams today.  I’ve adored this man’s voice since I was quite young.  We had a Christmas album of his and it was my favorite.  I would take Williams over Sinatra anyday.  He strikes the perfect balance of smooth and expressive.  My favorite Andy Williams song of all time is “O Holy Night,” but I don’t do Christmas in September.  Still it is impressive and beautiful and you may enjoy a listen here.  I tear up everytime.

Everyone is posting “Moon River” today, which is all well and good, but Andy Williams or not I’ve been sick of that song for 20 years.  Here’s something a bit more outside the box for you: two musical icons crooning the sweet sounds of some sweet bossa nova.  “Girl from Ipanema” conjures up images of the life of luxury I hope to lead someday.  I’m talkin’ frozen drinks and seaside bossa nova 24/7.  There’s something so easy and lovely about this.  They just let it happen.  Don’t you feel like so many performers are just trying SO HARD lately?  I guess they don’t have a choice.  These guys just make it look easy.

In summary: RIP Andy Williams and Antonio Carlos Jobim
