“Supernova” – Liz Phair

I took a couple of days off from blogging so as to revive my delicate creative soul and to subsequently provide you with more of the literary and musical gold that you’ve come to expect from starcollecteur.  Prepare to have your mind blown, you know, per usual.

As I recall, it was eighth grade and I was enjoying some weekly afternoon radio show broadcast from some local high school.  Damn it.  Does anyone else from Broward County, Florida remember this?  I know I recorded several of the shows, but those are on cassettes at my parents’ house so that doesn’t help me at all.

But wait!  Thanks to the internet I have the answer!  The radio station was WKPX  88.5 FM out of Piper High!  Awesome.  I’m sure we’re all very relieved to know this now.

On Friday afternoons they played a countdown of the week’s top new songs.  The station was all alternative so it quickly found its way into my eighth grade heart.  It was the best place for me to hear about new music that wasn’t being played on mainstream radio, and the high school DJs sounded so COOL.  During this countdown show was when I first heard Liz Phair’s “Supernova.”  In love immediately.

Proceeded to purchase a CASSETTE SINGLE of the song.  What a waste of materials!  There was probably some other song on there too but as you may have already guessed I have no idea what the B-side was.  I didn’t care for it.  “Supernova” was special because it was the first song in which I heard the word “fuck” used in the sexual sense (as opposed to the “fuck you” sense).  And the word “ass” was included for good measure!  A policeman’s ass, no less.  It’s amazing how much that kind of thing means to you when you’re 13.  I wouldn’t dare play this song in the car with my mom.

Sadly, growing up I didn’t have MTV so it was many years before I saw this video.  But I had seen pictures and heard her music and therefore knew that Liz Phair was a true mid-’90s bad ass grrrl who deserved my attention and admiration.

In summary: ’90s alt-pop.  Catchy.  Sexy lady.  Solid.  Done.  Now I watch The Price is Right.
