“You Can’t Treat Me That Way” – Kate Earl

Famous words on the subject of personal mistreatment:

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” -Eleanor Roosevelt

“Don’t phunk with my heart.” -Black Eyed Peas

“You can’t treat me that way.” -Kate Earl

BEP puts this very eloquently, but at the moment I’m enjoying Kate Earl’s take on the matter.  A woman writing this kind of song walks a fine line, as does a woman who is actually in this situation, calling someone on his or her bullshit.  She can employ a variety of tactics to get her point across, but Kate’s is the most winning option.  Kate is saying, ever so seductively, “Oh, surely that’s not what you intended to say?  I didn’t think so.”

This is a girl power song for the thinking woman.  It’s soulful and sultry and I love the unique feel musically.  A little bit trip-hoppy with its base firmly planted in R&B, this has facets of several genres utilized to glorious effect.  I honestly never want this song to end.

In summary: Don’t phunk with her heart.  She WILL NOT with that mess.

(A note regarding the video: This appears to be the only option for this song on YouTube that was not made by a 13-year-old girl.  Ooh, look!  Horsies!)
